pride and politics

This probably makes me weird, but I love the scenes in the New Testament where Jesus really lets the Pharisees and the teachers of the law have it. It's safe to say that He had zero tolerance for their hypocrisy. I like to imagine what it would have been like to be in the crowd and witness this incredibly awkward and tense scene (see Matthew 23). I'm sure I would be standing behind Jesus with a big grin on my face as He was ripping into them because if I am repulsed by anything, it's pride and hypocrisy.

But wait. You don't really think Jesus would let me get away with that, do you?

Inevitably, Jesus reveals what's really in my heart. I have no problem pointing out pride in someone else, but what about my own? It seems to show up the most when I'm pointing it out in others. Hmmmm.

Jesus didn't throw any soft punches regarding hypocrisy in character. The Pharisees and teachers of the law looked good on the outside, but inside was a totally different story. If we read this only think, "Wow, Jesus really let them have it!" then we have missed the point.

Wondering where I'm going with this?

We are entering into a highly charged political season, and as Christ-followers, we'd better be on our guard against pride. It's easy to take a stand for what we believe is right yet pridefully condemn anyone who doesn't agree with us.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not suggesting we not take a stand for what's right. What I am saying is, we'd better do it in the right way. Because we can be right, but if we are wrong in the way we are right, we're still wrong.

If I profess Jesus as my Lord and Savior and am quick to tell others I am a Christian and how much I love everyone...yet pridefully condemn those who disagree with me politically and resort to name-calling ... what's that say to someone who isn't a Christian?

Think about this for a minute.

Jesus was right ALL THE TIME. Yet we never see Him belittling or arguing from a prideful position. It IS possible to show respect and honor to anyone – even if we disagree about everything.

Yes, by all means, take a stand for what's right. But let's stand with a humble heart and the same mindset as Christ Jesus. Let's honor those with whom we disagree. Let's engage in political conversation as though Jesus were standing next to us. Because here's the deal – if we don't – then we end up exhibiting the same pride that we hate in others. Who wins if that happens? Neither side – but the enemy sure does rejoice. Let's not cooperate with the enemy this political season. Let's rise above and walk in humility as Jesus did. It IS possible.

The space between a promise and fulfillment

What do we do with the space between a promise and its fulfillment?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Sometimes, I feel stuck in the muck between a prayer and an answer. I've been praying for something for a long time. You know what I'm talking about? Like a loooooooong time. What happens in the space between the promise and its fulfillment? We have lots of options to choose from. Here's just a sample of some of the choices I've made:

Frustration. Being frustrated always makes me arrogant, and unpleasant (to put it mildly).

Hopeless. This is a scary and dark place, and quite frankly, I know better because Jesus is my hope, but I need to be reminded of that when the situation seems hopeless.

Weary. Feels like I'm covered in leeches draining me of any strength I have left (sorry that’s gross).

Needless to say, when I choose frustration, hopelessness, and weariness in the space between a prayer and a promise, it gets ugly. Truthfully, I get ugly. And I don't like me ugly.

God told Moses at the burning bush that He had come down to rescue His people from slavery (Exodus 3:8). Yet, before they would see that promise fulfilled, things would get worse, much, much worse. So bad in fact, that Moses said to God,

"Why Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."

If you struggle in the space between a promise and its fulfillment, you are in good company. Moses did, too.

However, there is a big fat difference between Moses and us. We know how the story ends. We have the written word of God to remind us of God's faithfulness.

You and I have this promise –

We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

When we feel stuck in the muck between the promise and its fulfillment, we have an important choice to make. We can choose frustration, hopelessness, doubt, worry, fear, and weariness, OR, we can choose to fill the space with faith, trust, and praise. Listen, when we CHOOSE to keep our faith, when we CHOOSE to trust that God is faithful, and when we CHOOSE to praise….

WE

FIND

JOY.

Joy. Right there in the space between the promise and its fulfillment.

We get to choose.

What will you choose today?

Focus determines outcome

Happy Tuesday! I am finally getting over an annoying head cold and I’m so grateful! I am such a big baby when I get a cold. I can’t take regular cold medicine because it makes me high. Too much information? Sorry, but it’s so true. I’m such a light-weight I can’t even handle a single dose of Benadryl. But I digress.

Here’s what’s on my mind this morning and I want you to picture me practically hollering it ….

What we focus on will determine our outcome!

fullsizeoutput_5a8.jpeg

Let me use a very familiar passage in Luke 8:22-25 to illustrate this point. Quick recap: the disciples were in a boat, Jesus decided to take a nap, and a storm threatened to drown them.

So –
The storm was bad = REALITY.
They were in great danger = REALITY.
They might drown = Possibility.

We can't blame the disciples for focusing on the storm. Drowning was a very real possibility and honestly, if we were in their sandals, it’s what we would focus on, too. Storms have a way of engulfing us and so often, we focus only on the possibility of drowning and forget there are other possibilities.

The disciples hollered at Jesus and woke Him up and recounted to Him the only possibility they could see in the moment - "We're going to drown!!" Yep. They very well could have. Drowning was a definitely a possibility. But it wasn't the only possibility.

Jesus sees ALL possibilities. Sure, Jesus saw the storm. It's not like Jesus woke up and said, "What storm? It's not that bad!" Actually, Jesus asked them, "Where is your faith?" In other words, "Did you forget who is in the boat with you? Drowning isn't the only possibility, guys" (my paraphrase, obviously).

I could talk about this for hours but I want to keep it short. Here’s all I want to remind you of today.

Jesus SEES the reality of your circumstance right now. You don’t have to deny your circumstances – the storm you are in may be very, very real and threatening to destroy everything and drown you in the process. Just remember this – Jesus doesn’t just see the reality of your storm - He sees more. There are always possibilities that we can’t see, but He can.

We have a choice. We can focus on the storm and the possibility of drowning OR we can shift our focus to Jesus.

What I’m saying is this: Sure, there may be a storm. That’s reality. But our God is able to create new realities.

Reminds me of the promise in Romans 8:28 –
We know that in ALL things (all storms, all trials, all persecutions, all heartaches - all means ALL) God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Friend, I have a simple question for you. Do you love Jesus?

If your heart’s cry to that simple question is yes, then let me encourage you to open your mouth and call on Him in the middle of your storm. If you focus on Him, the possibilities are endless, and drowning won't be one of them.
